Hidden New York #1
There are little streets, courts, drives, and pedestrian alleys located across new york city that are private and/or gated. The is no arguing that New York is a segmented city, but that notion is more typically attached to the sheer verticality of privilege. The gated community acts as the suburban stereotype. Not so fast….New York (yes Manhattan) has several examples of this exclusion, that go beyond any notions of Anglicized privacy that Gramercy Park might evoke. This is the first in a series of examples of these horizontal private enclaves. Sniffen Court was constructed in the 1850s and contains 10 small townhouses organized around a brick pedestrian courtyard with a gate at the north end.
